Editor-in-Chief Hu Shuli Leaves "Caijing" Magazine, Propaganda Czar Liu Yunshan Testing Hu Jintao?
Boxun reports that just after the World Media Forum in Beijing
concluded on October 10, Communist Party General Secretary Hu Jintao
pledged to the international media community: "The Chinese government
will protect the right of foreign media to conduct interviews, and will
encourage and protect domestic media's watchdog role in order to
promote the people's right to information, free expression, oversight
and political participation."
Hu's voice had barely stilled when close to 100 staff members of
China's leading business magazine--Caijing--resigned en masse. Everyone
knows the face of Caijing, talented reporter and editor Hu Shuli. But
the real power behind the throne is the son of former NPC vice-chairman
Wang Bingqian, Wang Boming. As a result of both Wang Boming's and
Politburo member Wang Qishan's support, Hu Shuli and Caijing have been
able to play an important watchdog role over the large public listings
of Chinese business groups. Other events they covered closely include
the Shishou incident and this July's violence in Xinjiang. The
magazine's influence has become very significant, this is apparent to
all.
So why is Hu Shuli leaving? It is due to pressure from the Central
Propaganda Department to stop reporting on official corruption.
